Rachel is a 4-channel scanning Lidar System designed for a range of Studies of the Chemistry and Dynamics of the Earth’s Atmosphere.
It exploits an eye-safe UV laser to measure the Earth’s Atmosphere from ground level to 50 km.
In its 4–channel mode, it measures Aerosols and the Densities of Nitrogen (total atmosphere density), Carbon Dioxide and Methane. The latter are two gases strongly related to climate change through their absorption of infra-red radiation in the troposphere.
In its scanning mode of operation, RACHEL can measure atmospheric dynamics in the boundary layer and troposphere.
It exploits the identification and tracking of features of aerosol distributions and tropospheric clouds, using the Correlation Wind Dynamics Technique.
